By Jonathan Walker

So what should we do
with the old one
here in tatters
stinking up the shadows?
I think we should kill it
stand in a circle
kicking, pinching
making faces
throw rocks at it
like in the bible
or on Second Avenue.

Give it pocket money
take it out to the dust
on the edge of town
rub it with rosemary
hug it
squeeze it
ask it questions
in a whisper
so no one else hears
then tell it to go away
in a loud and ringing shout
ready for tears.
And don’t come back here
any more.
